Common Phlebotomy Errors

This course focuses on the identification, causes, prevention, and management of common errors encountered in phlebotomy practice. It provides learners with the knowledge and practical understanding required to recognize mistakes that occur before, during, and after blood collection, which can affect specimen quality, laboratory results, and patient safety.

The course examines pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical errors in blood specimen collection and handling. Students will learn about issues such as patient misidentification, incorrect order of draw, hemolysis, improper specimen labeling, prolonged tourniquet application, poor site preparation, and inadequate specimen handling. Emphasis is placed on implementing quality assurance measures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and infection prevention protocols to minimize errors in clinical practice.

Through case studies, practical demonstrations, and scenario-based discussions, learners will develop the skills necessary to detect potential phlebotomy errors, take corrective actions, and maintain high standards of laboratory practice. The course ultimately aims to improve diagnostic accuracy, patient safety, and overall healthcare quality.
